The Andes mountains stretch 8500 km along the western coast of South America, from northern Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego. Across this vast latitudinal expanse, the Andes form a complex system of peaks, cordilleras and altiplanos with an average elevation of over 3500 m (11,500 ft) and a maximum elevation of over 6900 m (22,600 ft), a result of millions of years of tectonic uplift and volcanism.

Because of the extreme elevational, latitudinal and climatic variation found in the Andes, they are home to an incredible diversity of ecosystems: from the pluvial forests of the Chocó, to the dry Atacama desert; from the western edges of the lowland Amazonian rainforest, to the high montane páramo and puna. Each of these ecosystems is home to a unique and often diverse assemblage of species.

Science has only just begun to unlock the mysteries of the Andes and the species that live there. A deeper understanding can only be acheived through multidisciplinary research. This includes biological inventories and taxonomic classifications, studies of the natural history and biogeography of Andean species, ecological and evolutionary studies, as well as studies of the historical processes, and geological and climatic events that have shaped the modern distribution of species and ecosystems. Ultimately, a greater knowledge and appreciation of Andean biodiversity will allow us to better protect it for future generations.

This webpage is designed to serve as a useful (though far from comprehensive) source of internet links to scientific and educational resources related to the Andes. A very short description of each link is provided, along with an indication of whether it is published in English (E) or Spanish (S). If any of these links have changed, or if you know of a link that should be included on this page, please contact me. This page and many of the links are under construction, so check back for updates.
